Jake Has His Duck Call On The Cover Of National Hunting Magazine.
On the cover of the May issue of Field and Stream magazine, one of the “Total Outdoorsmen” pictured is wearing a custom duck call handcrafted by John ‘Jake’ Jacobson, formerly ofDevils Lake,North Dakota.
Jacobson says, “Yes, that’s my call and you can almost see it on the cover! There is a good picture of it on page 61 of the magazine, hanging around Chad Weatherford’s neck. Chadfound me through my internet site (www.jakescalls.com). He liked my unique duck calls and asked me to send him one to wear for this photo shoot. I sent him one of my favorites, a Cocobolo call capped with African Blackwood, with maple and purpleheart laminated into it.” Chad has encouraged Jacobson to make inhale/exhale grunt deer calls also and they will soon be on his website.
Jacobson grew up inDevils Lake,North Dakota, a prime waterfowl hunting area, in the 1960s. He hunted with his father, Minor Jacobson, every weekend during the waterfowl season. “Some years the ducks were so scarce that the limit was just one mallard, but we hunted anyway. Dad taught me to appreciate the game birds and just being outdoors. When I was making plans to retire, I was looking for an interesting hobby that could maybe add a few dollars to the income. I came across an article in the Minneapolis Tribune about a guy that was making duck calls and figured I could learn how to do that too. So I did. ”
Now, after being in business six years Jacobson has established a web site and is selling his unique calls on the internet. A few years ago he was contacted by Teddy Lowe, a wildlife artist inArkansas. “Teddy wanted to put his art on some of my duck calls. I started sending some down to him and have his artwork is on the calls on my collector pages on the website. I can hardy keep those around. He does great work.”
Jacobson spent almost 50 years inNorth Dakotawith a career in the legal field. After retiring in December from a position with Thomson Reuters inMinnesota, Jacobson has moved toLakeCherokeebyTamassee,South Carolina, He is continuing his craft on more of a full-time basis in his small shop on the lake. “ Besides getting into the deer calls, I am also developing a process for making one piece turkey box calls. When I craft some unique looking box calls, they will be on the website too. Teddy is anxious to do his magic on the turkey calls. I like to craft calls that people will love to hold and will appreciate not only the sound, but also the beauty and craftsmanship of the call. Many of my customers tell me they are too nice to use! These are special calls.”
